Asus Zenbook 17 Review

The Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED is undoubtedly one of our favorite laptops. It was announced in October in India and left a lasting impression. The unusual form factor raised many questions about its practicality and ease of use. We’ll explore all of these in our review. According to Asus, Zenbook 17 Fold OLED OLED (UX9702), is the world’s first 17.3 inch laptop with a folding screen. However, this laptop is not the first to do so. This title went to Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Fold with a 13.3-inch foldable display. A second-generation model was released a few months later with a 16.3 inch folding display.

There is clearly potential for such an OLED device with HP working on something similar to the  Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED. We need to see if Asus’ very expensive new experiment is just a novelty or if it has any practical advantages over a traditional large-screen laptop. India Price of Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED (UX9702),

The Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED can be purchased in a single configuration (Intel Core i7 with 16GB RAM, 1TB SATA SSD) at Rs. It’s a ridiculous price tag of Rs. 3,29,990, but it is still an affordable option. In fact, Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Fold OLED was launched in India in 2021 at roughly the same cost, with a smaller display and 16GB RAM. You might have gotten the  Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED for Rs. Discounts and other freebies, such as an extended warranty or a portable SSD, are included in the price of 2,84,290.

You could get a premium gaming laptop, or multiple premium laptops, for less than  Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED. But that would miss the point. The ability to fold a 17 inch touchscreen in half is a premium feature.  You can buy it on Amazon

Design and accessories for Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED (UX9702).

The Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED comes in a fancy box with accessories like a Bluetooth keyboard with a touchpad, a USB Type C to Type A dongle, and a faux leather carry case. The Bluetooth keyboard has been cleverly designed so that the laptop can fold with it between the two halves. Asus doesn’t include a stylus for the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold LED, which may disappoint creative professionals.

The box contains the laptop in its folded state. It is similar to other foldable displays we have seen. The  Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED has a hinge that has been tested for 30,000 cycles of opening and closing. Although this is not as many as the Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 hinge’s ( review), it’s still a lot more than the Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 hinge’s that has a rating of 200,000 cycles. However, I suspect users won’t use a laptop nearly as often as they do a smartphone.

For a first-of-its-kind product, I believe Asus has done a great job with the build quality. The  Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED feels premium and sturdy with a combination of metal and glass for the back panel and faux leather for the sliding mechanism that protects the hinge and the built in kickstand. For durability, the laptop has a MIL STD 810H certificate. Although there is no camera at the back, this tablet is not meant to be used that way. Even when unfolded, the device is quite chunky and heavy. The device is slightly thicker than the iPad Pro (11-inch), (Review), and it doubles in size when folded, making it appear like a small binder or encyclopedia. It weighs in at a little more than 1.5kg, making it heavier that a MacBook Air M2 (Review). Although it’s still portable, it is a little heavy. The Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED is versatile. However, the layout of components and ports makes it ideal for two main uses. You can use the laptop as a regular laptop, with the screen partially folded, or fully unfolded and supported on the kickstand. The webcam and IR sensors to recognize Windows Hello faces are located on the top of the laptop when it is used as a regular laptop.

The motherboard and other main components, as well as a cooling fan, are located in the upper half of the laptop. The battery is found in the lower half. The webcam has two speakers that fire upwards. The other two speakers are located on the bottom. The volume buttons and the Thunderbolt 4 port (USB Type-C) are located on the sides of the grilles. On the right side, you’ll find the second Thunderbolt 4 port. A headphone jack and exhaust vent are also located. The  Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED rests on its side-mounted kickstand on two rubber feet. Despite the orientation change, face recognition worked perfectly. Software and specifications for Asus Zenbook 17 OLED (UX9702), specifications

BOE’s display is the highlight of the Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED. The panel is 17.3 inches in size and has a resolution of 2560×1920 pixels. It also features a 4:3 aspect ratio. It can produce up to 500 nits brightness. It also holds certifications for Dolby Vision HDR and Pantone colour accuracy. Because the display is not protected by ultra-thin glass, it should be treated with care. The box contains instructions that will help users fold the laptop correctly.

The  Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED can be used with the Bluetooth keyboard attached at the lower half. This will result in the area below the keyboard automatically switching off, effectively consuming less power, and your content automatically adapts to the top half. You get a 12.5 inch screen running at half the resolution, 1920×1280.

The Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED is powered with the Intel Core i7-1250U CPU. It has a total 10 cores, including two performance cores and eight efficiency cores. The U-series Intel 12th Gen CPUs consume less power (9W TDP) so they can be used with no active cooling. To cool the  Asus Zenbook 17 Fold, Asus uses a heatpipe or fan. LPDDR5 RAM (16GB) is soldered to the motherboard. A standard 1TB PCIe SSD serves as storage. These components cannot be upgraded by users. It has Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5 and a 75WHr battery. The included 65W Type C charger can charge the battery quickly. You can buy it on Amazon

Windows 11 comes preinstalled on the Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED. It also includes standard apps like Microsoft Office Home & Student 2021, and a trial of McAfee LiveSafe. MyAsus, which allows you to run diagnostics and change the charging style depending on how much you use, adjust the colour saturation, and many other functions, is also included. You can even launch the app by pressing a button on your Bluetooth keyboard.

Pixel Refresh (activates an extra screen saver if no activity is for 30 minutes) or Pixel Shift (prevents any unwanted burn in if a static picture is displayed for a prolonged period of time) are features that are automatically enabled. This feature was present on OLED laptops such as the VivoBook K15 OLED (Review). Target mode saves battery power by keeping only the active window lit and dimming any background windows.

ScreenXpert 3 by Asus is a useful tool that allows you to quickly switch between different window layouts in your open applications. You can place any window by hovering over the “Maximise” button.

Performance and battery life of the Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED (UX9702).

The Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED was used for a few weeks. It was a great experience, although there were some issues. It was very useful to be able to quickly arrange open windows or apps to different corners of the screen using the shortcut. Windows 11 also makes it very easy to change the resolution and layout of the screen once you have docked or unplugged the Bluetooth keyboard. You can buy it on Amazon

Sometimes, however, Windows would not adjust the layout properly when I changed the orientation (landscape to portrait) of my laptop. The problem would resolve itself if the device was left alone for a while or if it was restarted. The screen would occasionally flash for a split-second, but this was only noticeable when static content was being displayed.

Despite the thick bezels surrounding the display, I didn’t take the Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED with me on my travels. However, when folded it is much smaller than other 13-inch laptops. It is heavy and thick, similar to a large diary. Dust settles on the display, as with most folding devices that don’t close flush.

Asus has several ways to use the  Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED. You can have the keyboard attached and place the display vertically or horizontally on a table, or as a large tablet. Although the touch response is excellent, I found it difficult to interact with the screen much as I prefer using the trackpad and keyboard. The Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED was mostly used in laptop mode, or as an All-in-One PC (AiO), on a desk with the kickstand. Although it is not very comfortable to use on a lap, it can be used on a desk. It’s best to use it in AiO mode, which is the largest display that allows you to do multiple tasks at once. You can buy it on Amazon

The  Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED’s Bluetooth keyboard is an integral part of the  Asus Zenbook 17 fold experience. It is slim and lightweight, the keys travel well and are not too loud, and the trackpad works quite well. Magnetically, it attaches to your laptop’s bezel. I believe Asus could have done a better job. The keyboard is flexible and feels fragile when docked. It should be able to charge the battery when it is attached to the laptop instead of needing to be plugged into separately. Many times, I had to fold the laptop with the keyboard docked and forget to turn it off. Only to find out that the battery was low.

Backlighting for the keys is the next major missing feature. This makes it difficult to use the laptop in the dark. The Bluetooth connection to Asus Zenbook 17 Fold 17 OLED was also a bit unreliable when I was even a few feet away. It would occasionally not register inputs from trackpad.

The Asus Zenbook 17 OLED is a great laptop for productivity. It also has an amazing OLED display that makes it a fantastic laptop for content consumption. It is almost impossible to see the fold line of the display when it is folded, and high-resolution content looks amazing on it. HDR content shines on this display, so much that I found it more enjoyable to watch TV shows and movies on the  Asus Zenbook 17 Fold 17OLED than on my 50 inch television. The four Harman Kardon speakers produce a stunning sound. It can be quite loud, and although there is some distortion if you crank it up to a maximum level, it’s still impressive for a laptop.

The performance of the Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED is excellent in general. Windows 11 boots quickly, multitasking is fast, and apps load quickly thanks to the large RAM. Despite being a U series CPU, the Intel Core i7 managed to score higher in synthetic benchmarks than both the P-series Core i7 CPUs and the H-series Core i7 CPUs. The  Asus Zenbook 17 Fold scored 592 points and 2,379 in Cinebench R20 single-core and multi-core tests. It also scored 4,915 in PCMark 10. Although this laptop is not intended for gaming, you can still play casual games with it.

Asphalt 9 Legends, for example, struggled to run at the native resolution of the display but performed better when running in laptop mode. The  Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED was even more difficult to handle for newer titles. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II could barely be played at 1080p with the lowest graphics settings. The CPU fan and cooling fan on the lower half of your body can get very hot when you are stressed. However, you will not feel any heat unless you hold that end. Even if you place your ear near the exhaust, the fan is barely audible.

Although I wasn’t sure what I could expect regarding battery life, I was surprised to see similar results when using the  Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED in full resolution and laptop mode. Battery Eater Pro ran for 4 hours and 24 minutes in laptop mode and 4 hours and 12 minutes in AiO modes. With mixed usage (laptop, AiO modes), one hour of standby and a little bit of work (Chrome and Slack desktop apps) and play (streaming through Netflix), I was easily able to get around 10-11 hours of actual running time. This is far more than I expected. With the included charger, the  Asus Zenbook 17 Fold charges fast. It can charge from 18 percent to 97 percent in less than an hour. You can buy it on Amazon

Verdict

A large display on any computer device is a huge benefit, especially for those who travel. This improves content consumption, productivity, and battery life. But, each device type has its limitations. You can only make a display as big as you need before it becomes an inconvenience. Although 17-inch laptop displays are not new, most of these devices don’t have the ability to be transported.

The Asus Zenbook 17 fold OLED is a bold new approach to large-screen laptops, and 2-in-1s in general. Rs. The price of Rs. Apart from the price, the keyboard and overall thickness are two of the things I would like Asus to improve on in the next iteration.

The Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED has a great display, excellent-sounding speakers and decent battery life. It also features a unique design. This laptop is worth considering if your workflow would benefit or if it’s just for fun, You can buy it on Amazon
